Zakyntho's Traditional and Local Businesses:&=&=&= 12 places
With help from the heavy rainfalls during the winter months the island of Zakynthos is ripe with both olives trees and grapevines, almost all families have their very own olive oil and wine which are both enjoyed in the home and in many cases used in local tavernas or restaurants. 'Zante currants' which are a small and intensely tasting currant are eaten as they are, used in the making of wine or dried and then added to cakes during baking. 'Ladotyri' is a local delicacy which is a spicy cheese made from both sheep and goats milk and is stored in olive oil during part of its production – hence the name, 'Pretza' is another cheese made locally here on Zakynthos which is a soft, creamy, very pungent white cheese. Honey is made and can be bought in the mountainous villages of the island, there is an ample supply of citrus fruits that can be found all over the island and finally for those of you with a sweet tooth you must try either 'Mandolata' (nougat, egg whites, honey, sugar and almonds), 'Fytoura' (semolina fried and covered with sugar) and/or 'Pasteli' (sesame seeds, honey and almonds).
