St. Mark's square (Platyforos) it constituted the most appreciable centre of social life of Zakynthos. Personalities of literature met there and exchanged opinions and a lot of historical facts that marked the political developments in Zakynthos, happened there.The tree of freedom in the centre of square symbolizes the release from Venetians and the arrival of the French republicans.

Here you can find also the Catholic Temple of Saint Mark that was founded in 1518. This church was founded as chapel of monastery of Fragkiskanon monks. Later it constituted the cathedral temple of Latin diocese of Zakynthos - Kefallinia. Today this diocese has been suppressed and Saint Markos functions only the summer. It is the only catholic church in Zakynthos.
